“The Warehouse House”

Artist, Annemarie Murland and her husband Jack, who has worked in the building industry for over 30 years, bought what was to become “The Warehouse House” in early 2015. The cottage’s history and original identity is located in the style of a 1920’s California bungalow. Located in Newcastle’s inner west, Maryville is a space and place that embodies a lifestyle that is peculiar to Newcastle. An amazing sense of community, immediate access to the city’s expanding topography where café culture and fine dining clash on the harbour and beach fronts, it is the place where everyone wants to live.

The owners had a very particular architectural and aesthetic vision of what this rebuild and extension should be. Their collaboration with the design team at DENAD Design & Co put in place a reimagining of the owner’s desire to design and build a Warehouse House. The project’s primary architectural aim was to celebrate the area’s industrial past, and moreover to reinvent the homes period design that had disappeared over time. In doing so, the cultural identity and streetscape of the area would not be damaged by the build.

An intimate working relationship with DENAD allowed for a seamless transition from the beginning to the end of the build, all of which would not have been possible without the local contractors and artisans who worked on the “Warehouse House”. Privacy and materiality are a core feature of the home. Reclaimed bricks, upper hunter timber beams, burnished concrete flooring, Venetian Plaster in the ensuite wet room and an edible garden provide an exact balance between the inside and north facing entertainment space of the home. The open plan living space is the heart of the home as it provides a space to dine, wine and entertain in complete privacy, and the mezzanine living area is a retreat where one can read, relax and enjoy the view.

We would like to take the inspiration from this house and transcend it into our next project, “The Hebridean”, where we shall continue to collaborate with with DENAD Design & Co.
